Trouble with my new boy

I just bought a new crowntail male on saturday. He was fine when I brought him home. I fed him that night, but when I woke up he was really bloated. It looks like constipation, however, he seems like he can't control where he is swimming too?? There are no other signs other than his seemingly constipated round tummy. There are no 'pine cone" scales, no discolorations, and he's not floating sideways or upside down. It just seems when he goes to swim somewhere..he ends up going backwards or up when he's trying to go down. Any idea?!

Thanks

you can see he doesnt look too happy :(

For now I just put him in a small tank so he doesnt have to swim too hard to get to the top.

How long?

I'm down to two female betta girls, red and tang, that share a 2.5 gallon heated tank. It's almost time for a cleaning, but I noticed that red just seemed a bit slow yesterday so I did a partial water change because it didn't seem right.

This morning she's full out pineconed and has no appetite. She's nearly three years old, but I'm still sad that my little fishy is going to die. No color changes, lumps, bumps, fuzz, goo or anything else. She actually looks pretty good, other than being swollen, pineconed and lethargic. :(
Anyone know how long she probably has? In the years I've kept bettas, this is the first dropsy I've ever had.

Rent it or run?

Hey everyone, I'm brand new here, so please forgive me if I start asking ridiculous questions.

I'm moving to Victoria in January, and a friend-of-a-friend has offered me a place for rent in James Bay.

It's a completely separate ground-level suite, brand spanking new construction, approx. 900 sq. ft, 1 bedroom with in-suite laundry.

He's asking me to pay $1100 a month.

Can one of you rent-savvy residents tell me if this is a reasonable deal or not? I simply have no clue what I should be paying...

Thanks in advance! Look forward to maybe meeting some of you and mixing it up in LiveJournal over the coming months!

Does anyone know of any salons downtown other than Aveda or Fish that have junior (i.e. cheaper) stylists? Bonus points if they have walk-ins available.

pedicure chairs, or a reasonable facsimile!

Hey everyone! I'm opening a nail salon downtown & I'm seeking a decent pedicure chair. I've looked on Used Victoria & everything i find is either nasty & outdated, or madly expensive. I understand that this may just be the way of things, but I was curious to know if anyone lurking around in here might have one kicking around, or know someone who is no longer in the business who is looking to sell one. As I said, I've tried Used Victoria & Craigslist & nothing's working for me. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! :)

Paint and painters

Who is the best place in town that will do paint matching with a paint chip. I'm renting a place and I'm moving in a bit and I'd like a)to get back my full deposit and b) leave the place as I found it.

Secondly, I want it do be a diy project but if not possible, is there good paint company in Victoria? I'm only wanting one room done in my condo and it probably will take less then a day.

Curiosity: Betta housing

Just curious. Has anyone seen any changes lately when it comes to pet stores and housing bettas?
I go primarily to a non chain store who keep their bettas in bowls(which I approve of as space is an issue, though I personally wouldn't use a bowl if I could help it), as opposed to the usual cup method, and one of the chain stores I visit now and then have change their betta housing from cups, to tanks/these odd betta specialized boxes where the center has a lower area for them to go down into and hide in. I've also noticed that Walmarts where I am have stopped selling fish altogether. I was most pleased by this.
I'm just wondering what it's like in other parts of the world. What sort of housing do you all see most?

Help!

The pretty deltatail I posted earlier isn't doing so well.

First, he shed what looks like this white film kinda like reptile skin that was floating on top. I told my roommate to change the water and drop a tablet of Lifeguard (an all purpose medicine) in. The next day, we put in another one. Now he's lethargic, lies on his side at the bottom of the tank, barely eats, and now his navy blue color is turning white.

What's wrong with him and what can we do?

EDIT: About two hours ago, Einstein the delta tail betta passed on.

We tried to save him, but in the end it was too little too late.

RIP Einstein.

Photography Lessons

Can anyone recommend a good, reasonably priced place to learn photography? Is it even useful/worthwhile? Do you have to have a big fancy camera before you take a course? Any info would be appreciated!

new crowntain! (& how much/often to feed)

I bought a betta after not having one for a couple years again :) 2 months ago I moved away from my hometown for school and had to make sure I'd have someone around to feed him during my 2 week Christmas break before I bought one.

First up - feeding. Can't quite remember how much I used to feed them. The betta care sheet that came with him suggests 2-3 pellets twice a day. And the care sheet isn't that horrific - it suggests large tanks (not bowls), a heater, and has other advice that isn't scary. The betta pellets I got say to feed him once for 2 minutes, as long as he keeps eating. So which is it? Tried checking the memories and websites listed on the info page with no luck.

Anyway, here's Captain Cupcake

Dust (?) in the tank

Hey, guys!

This is kind of bizarre, so I'm seeing if this has happened to anyone else in this group. Never happened to me before.

A few weeks ago, my male betta died from dropsy. I emptied and scrubbed his tank. I was planning on moving my female (who is in a bowl) into the big tank. I filled it up and was waiting a couple days for everything to settle and the heater to catch up before I plopped her in. Lo and behold, when I looked at the tank today, there is GUNK in it.

WTF? It looks like it snowed in my tank. Or what it looks like if you put a pair of pants through the laundry with a tissue in the pocket. I'm thinking it MIGHT be dust (?) because I had the lid off the tank. But I'm at a loss.

Any ideas? Do you think the filter will pick it up in a couple days? I really don't want to have to tear my tank apart and clean the whole thing again because I JUST DID. AUGH.

I've never seen a worse public transit system in my life than the one you have here in Victoria. That website is just a convoluted heap of garbage.

Can someone just tell me what I'm sure is very straightforward and simple information, how do I get to the airport from downtown Victoria???

Thanks!

Winter coat donations?

I heard on the radio the call out for children's coats for the winter, but is there a place where I could donate a men's winter coat?
